Purpose of the Role
Closely collaborates with the HoD: Roads Engineering and HoD Project Management in directing, co-ordinating, initiating, planning, executing, monitoring & control, integration and closing of the road engineering aspects of Roads Engineering Projects. Drives the implementation of the Climax Limited Roads Engineering division of growth. Completes engineering projects by organizing and controlling various project elements.
Job Duties
- Develops project objectives by reviewing project proposals and plans; conferring with management
- Determines project responsibilities by identifying project phases and elements; assigning personnel to phases and elements; reviewing bids from contractors
- Determines project specifications by studying product design, customer requirements, and performance standards; completing technical studies; preparing cost estimates
- Confirms product performance by designing and conducting tests
- Determines project schedule by studying project plan and specifications; calculating time requirements; sequencing project elements
- Maintains project schedule by monitoring project progress; coordinating activities; resolving problems
- Controls project plan by reviewing design, specifications, and plan and schedule changes; recommending actions
- Controls project costs by approving expenditures; administering contractor contracts
- Prepares project status reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends; recommending actions
- Maintains safe and clean working environment by enforcing procedures, rules, and regulations
- Maintains product and company reputation by complying with international standards and state regulations
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
- Ensure that all employees are supplied with the relevant tools required to perform jobs
- Formulate systems for smooth running of the Roads Engineering division to enable synergy and coherence
- Design, Reporting and Project Management of projects in Roads Engineering division to meet projects objectives (Geometric design of roads, pavement design and roads related stormwater design)
- Preparation of proposals, tender and contract documents for the infrastructural services mentioned above
- Incumbent is expected to carry out site supervision of construction works for short durations on sites as follows;
- Ensuring compliance with design/specifications and standards
- Ensuring compliance with programme and all knowledge areas
- Attending site meetings
- Preparing reports
- Do any ad-hoc office duties as assigned by the HoD: Roads Engineering.
Responsibilities / Duties
People
- Incumbent to motivate the team in the Roads Engineering Department to work and produce results as desired by the management
- Delegate work effectively to the team in the Roads Engineering division.
Training and Development
Personal
- Engage in activities which contribute to personal CPD (Continuous Professional Development) and maintain professional accreditation
- Responsible for on-going informal and formal development to stay abreast of innovations in the industry.
Team
- Identify training and skills gaps in the department
- Identify suitable training programs (internal and external) that can fill learning gaps
- Identify and facilitate activities which contribute to development of team members
- Implement and oversee mentoring and informal training/partnering within department
- Provide guidance and training in design skills and such other as necessary to engineers and Technicians under the incumbent for Continuous Professional Development.
Company
- Liaise with HR to facilitate training for department
- Liaise with other project managers to identify learnership and bursary opportunities that will benefit the company.
Qualifications & Experience / Minimum Requirements
- BEng (Civil), ECSA registered PrEng Post graduate qualifications will be an advantage. Experience in all aspects of roads design roads including geometric design, road signs and markings design, pavement and stormwater related to roads design as well as the preparing quantities, specifications for tender and contract documents
- Minimum 15 years in professional engineering design, construction. Proven management and leadership in consulting engineering
- Legal knowledge: Employee Equity Act, Labour Relations Act, OHS Act, Design compliance standards, FIDIC/Colto conditions pf contract
- Software: MS Office, MS Project, Civil Designer and other road design and drafting software
- Quality Management: ISO 9000 compliance
- Language proficiency: Must be able to read, write and communicate in English
- Travel: Occasional or long term travel to site , intercontinental and internationally
- Driver’s license: essential

Administration
- Ensure filing systems are maintained and up to date
- Ensure that employees operate within ISO standards
- Ensure correct filing and signing of documents as well as necessary approvals are obtained from clients and service providers
- To be aware of the chain of custody of documents/drawings.

- Is able to draw up a departmental budget
- Is able to ensure project budgets are adhered to
- To operate efficiently and make economically sound decisions on all projects
- Ensure fairness in procurement.
Salary: To be negotiated (inclusive of benefits) depending on relevance and duration of experience.
Reports to:
Travel: Regular inter-provincial site visits, intercontinentally and internationally.
