Purpose of the Role

Closely collaborates with the HoD: Civil Engineering in directing, co-ordinating, initiating, planning, executing, monitoring & control, integration, and closing of the Civil Engineering Projects. Drives general Civil Engineering related design and deliverables.

Job Duties

  • Lead, manage and guide Engineers, technicians, draughts persons and delegate work effectively in the Civil Engineering Department
  • Ensure that all employees in the team are supplied with the relevant tools required to perform jobs
  • Formulate systems for smooth running of the Civil Engineering section to enable synergy and coherence
  • Design, Reporting in Civil Engineering section to meet projects objectives.
  • Preparation of proposals, tender and contract documents for the infrastructure services nationally and internationally
  • Construction monitoring and implementation of site construction work as and when required on a part time basis on at least the following aspects:
    • Ensuring compliance with design/specifications and standards
    • Ensuring compliance with programme and all knowledge areas
    • Attending site meetings
    • Preparing reports
  • Do any ad-hoc office duties as assigned by the HoD: Civil Engineering
  • Guide and train in design and other necessary skills to engineers and technicians to ensure continuous professional development
  • Keep abreast with technology development and research in the field of water and wastewater engineering
  • Coordinate and supervise the production of technical drawings design and reporting inputs by supporting staff
  • Client liaison including meetings and reporting
  • Compliance with the company’s Quality Management System ISO9001 requirements
  • Assisting with the preparation of requests for proposals expressions of interest panel applications and tenders
  • Management of projects and monitoring of performance and profitability

Training and Development

Personal

  • Engage in activities which contribute to personal CPD (Continuous Professional Development) and maintain professional accreditation
  • Responsible for on-going informal and formal development to stay abreast of innovations in the industry.

Team

  • Identify training and skills gaps in the department
  • Identify suitable training programs (internal and external) that can fill learning gaps.
  • Identify and facilitate activities which contribute to development of team members.
  • Implement and oversee mentoring and informal training/partnering within department.
  • Provide guidance and training in design skills and such other as necessary to engineers and Technicians under the incumbent for Continuous Professional Development

Company 

  • Liaise with HR to facilitate training for department
  • Liaise with other project managers to identify learnership and bursary opportunities that will benefit the company.

Responsibilities / Duties

Qualifications & Experience / Minimum Requirements

  • BEng (Civil), ECSA registered Pr Eng. Post graduate qualifications will be an advantageous.  Good experience in bulk water and wastewater municipal infrastructure, stormwater systems, earthworks, basic road and drainage systems.  Some process design experience will be advantageous.  Experience of managing a team of up to ten employees.
  • Minimum 20 years in engineering design and management.  Minimum 5 years after professional (ECSA) registration.  Proven management and leadership in consulting engineering
  • Legal knowledge:  Design compliance standards
  • Software:  MS Office, MS Project, Autodesk related software, Civil Designer, Advantageous: KY-pipe, GPSX
  • Quality Management:  ISO 9000 compliance
  • Language proficiency:  Must be able to read, write and communicate in English
  • Travel: Occasional travel to site , intercontinental and internationally
  • Driver’s license:  essential

  • Ensure filing systems are maintained and up to date
  • Ensure that employees operate within ISO standards
  • Ensure correct filing and signing of documents as well as necessary approvals are obtained from clients and service providers
  • To be aware of the chain of custody of documents/drawings.

Financial

  • Is able to draw up a departmental budget
  • Is able to ensure project budgets are adhered to
  • To operate efficiently and make economically sound decisions on all projects
  • Ensure fairness in procurement.

Salary: To be negotiated (inclusive of benefits) depending on relevance and duration of experience.

Reports to: Head of Department: Civil Engineering

Travel: Occasional travel to site, intercontinentally and internationally.
